Prof. Ming-Jui Hung | Medical Discoveries | Lifetime Achievement Award
Chang Gung Medical Foundation | Taiwan
Dr. Hung, Ming-Jui is a distinguished cardiologist, academic leader, and clinician–scientist specializing in cardiovascular imaging, coronary physiology, and translational vascular research. He currently serves as Professor of Medicine at Chang Gung University College of Medicine and Professor Physician in the Division of Cardiology at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Keelung, where he has played a central role in advancing patient care, medical education, and institutional governance. Dr. Hung’s clinical expertise encompasses adult cardiology, coronary intervention, critical care medicine, and advanced echocardiography. He is widely recognized for his leadership in cardiovascular imaging, particularly in the assessment of coronary flow reserve and structural–functional cardiac remodeling. His extensive hospital and administrative service includes senior leadership roles such as vice superintendent, department chief, section chief, and chair of multiple institutional committees, reflecting his strong commitment to healthcare quality, ethics, safety, and innovation. In research, Dr. Hung focuses on the molecular and functional mechanisms underlying vascular dysfunction, with particular emphasis on endothelial nitric oxide synthase regulation and its interaction with inflammatory mediators. His laboratory has contributed important insights into how inflammation alters nitric oxide bioavailability and vascular reactivity, advancing the understanding of dynamic coronary stenosis and coronary spasm. He is also a pioneer in investigating Rho/Rho kinase activity in patients with coronary spasm, integrating invasive and noninvasive methodologies to bridge bench research with clinical application. A major component of Dr. Hung’s work centers on echocardiographic evaluation of coronary flow reserve and cardiac remodeling in chronic kidney disease, with special attention to longitudinal changes in left ventricular and left atrial structure and function. These studies aim to improve risk stratification and cardiovascular management in high-risk populations. Beyond research and clinical care, Dr. Hung is an influential educator and mentor, contributing extensively to undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education. He is actively involved in national and international professional societies, editorial boards, and peer review for leading scientific journals. His career reflects sustained excellence in clinical medicine, research innovation, academic leadership, and service to the medical community.
