A pivotal stage of his career unfolded in New York, where he worked under the mentorship of renowned liver specialist Charles S. Lieber. During this period, he conducted influential biochemical research on alcohol-related liver injury, including solubilizing and isolating the microsomal ethanol-oxidizing system and exploring cytochrome P450–related pathways. This work strengthened his commitment to uncovering the biological foundations of hepatotoxicity and decisively shaped his future research direction. Returning to Germany, Professor Teschke continued to advance academically in gastroenterology, hepatology, and infectious diseases at the Heinrich Heine University of Düsseldorf. He completed his habilitation, received a prestigious university research award, and expanded his clinical and experimental work on alcohol-induced liver damage, hydrocarbon toxicity, and the growing challenge of drug-induced liver injury.
